Two-Step Estimation of Functional Linear Models with Applications to Longitudinal Data
نویسندگان
چکیده
Functional linear models are useful in longitudinal data analysis. They include many classical and recently proposed statistical models for longitudinal data and other functional data. Recently, smoothing spline and kernel methods have been proposed for estimating their coe cient functions nonparametrically but these methods are either intensive in computation or ine cient in performance. To overcome these drawbacks, in this paper, a simple and powerful two-step alternative is proposed. In particular, the implementation of the proposed approach via local polynomial smoothing is discussed. Methods for estimating standard deviations of estimated coe cient functions are also proposed. Some asymptotic results for the local polynomial estimators are established. Two longitudinal data sets, one of which involves time-dependent covariates, are used to demonstrate the proposed approach. Simulation studies show that our two-step approach improves the kernel method proposed in Hoover, et al (1998) in several aspects such as accuracy, computation time and visual appealingness of the estimators.

Maximum Likelihood Estimation of Parameters in Generalized Functional Linear Model
Sometimes, in practice, data are a function of another variable, which is called functional data. If the scalar response variable is categorical or discrete, and the covariates are functional, then a generalized functional linear model is used to analyze this type of data. In this paper, a truncated generalized functional linear model is studied and a maximum likelihood approach is used to esti...

‎In this article‎, ‎we develop two nonparametric smoothing estimators for parameter of a time-variant parametric model‎. ‎This parameter can be from any parametric family or from any parametric or semi-parametric regression model‎. ‎Estimation is based on a two-step procedure‎, ‎in which we first get the raw estimate of the parameter at a set of disjoint time...
متن کاملConditional Dependence in Longitudinal Data Analysis
Mixed models are widely used to analyze longitudinal data. In their conventional formulation as linear mixed models (LMMs) and generalized LMMs (GLMMs), a commonly indispensable assumption in settings involving longitudinal non-Gaussian data is that the longitudinal observations from subjects are conditionally independent, given subject-specific random effects. Although conventional Gaussian...
متن کاملEstimating the Time of a Step Change in Gamma Regression Profiles Using MLE Approach
Sometimes the quality of a process or product is described by a functional relationship between a response variable and one or more explanatory variables referred to as profile. In most researches in this area the response variable is assumed to be normally distributed; however, occasionally in certain applications, the normality assumption is violated. In these cases the Generalized Linear Mod...

In some applications, the response variable assumes values in the unit interval. The standard linear regression model is not appropriate for modelling this type of data because the normality assumption is not met. Alternatively, the beta regression model has been introduced to analyze such observations. A beta distribution represents a flexible density family on (0, 1) interval that covers symm...
